Ten Tools for Bible Study & Journaling

By: Ashley Davis

Many of us that are fans of Bible study or Bible journaling are also big fans of the huge variety of tools that can be used during study or journaling time. From watercolors to pens to tapes and more, there’s no shortage of fun products to help you engage with God’s word through study, notetaking, and journaling. Today, we’re sharing ten of our favorite products with you. We’re focusing on pens & highlighters, tabs & tapes, and paper products. The cute, fun supplies are certainly not essential to a successful, daily walk with Jesus, but they can make the journey more colorful and interesting!

Pens & Highlighters:

Mildliner
These are hands down one of the best highlighter/marker combos ever. One end is a classic slanted highlighter  shape and the other end is a fine tip marker. The colors are mild and not traditional highlighter bright without being faded or bland. The colors are rich! Our link recommends the 15-pack, but the Zebra brand sells these markers in different variety packs. They do not bleed through Bible pages and are very pretty for accenting other colored areas of journaling Bibles.

Mr. Pen Gel Highlighter
These Mr. Pen Highlighters are unique. Rather than being the traditional ink of classic highlighters, they have an almost crayon-like wax consistency. These are definitely no-bleed highlighters. Because they’re not made out of liquid ink, they also won’t dry out if left uncovered. They are smooth, won’t smear, and have a “twist-up gel stick design.” Mr. Pen sells these in a variety of different color packs and even combines them with their pens.

Papermate Flair Pens
If you’re a person that enjoys writing in a variety of colors, you’ve gotta check out Papermate’s Flair Felt Pens. The standard 12 pack comes in the following colors: black, blue, magenta, green, lilac, lime, orange, pink, purple, red, sky, marigold. They are medium point (0.7 millimeter) and will not bleed through pages. As with our last two suggested tools, you can find Flair pens in a variety of color packs. There’s bound to be one that suites your preferences!

Micron Fineliner Pens
If you’re a person who enjoys a fine or ultra fine line pen, Microns are the pens for you. We’ve linked a black set that has a variety of sizes [(005 (0.20mm), 01 (0.25mm), 02 (0.30mm), 03 (0.35mm), 05 (0.45mm), 08 (0.50mm)] in the pack. Micron boasts their archival, no bleed ink; they shouldn’t fade, and they shouldn’t bleed. They are also sold in a variety of colors.

Honorable mention in this category
Papermate Ink Joy Fine Point
These Ink Joy pens (0.50 mm) are a popular choice, but they aren’t quite 100% no-bleed. The color is rich and these specific ones have a very fine line. Normally, you can’t find a size smaller than 0.7 mm in stores.

Tabs & Tapes:

Daily Grace Co. Bible Tabs
We love the Daily Grace Co. Bible tabs, and they have several beautiful designs to complement your Bible. These tabs are very sturdy and easy to adhere to the first page of each book of the Bible. We suggest waiting until the tabs go on sale because DGC runs sales regularly that mark their tabs down to half price. Although, they’re honestly worth the regular price of $10!

Mr. Pen brand Washi Tape
If you’re unfamiliar with washi tape, it’s a removable, tearable tape that is great for decorating, tabbing, or noting things in your Bible or notebook. It adds a colorful flair and is also useful for taping notes inside your Bible or notebook. There are hundreds of washi tape options out there, but this the brand we like. This particular set comes in a variety of colors and sizes.

Washi Tape Dispenser
Now that you’ve started a washi tape collection, you need a dispenser for it, right? This lazy-susan style dispenser is super handy for quickly choosing and cutting the right tape for whatever design you’re working on. A dispenser would be even more valuable to people who prefer a cleaner edge to their washi tapes.

Paper Products:

Kraft Sticky Notes
These brown sticky notes are really handy for folks that like note taking on post-it style notes but don’t like the colors usually included in those sets. These kraft-paper brown style notes are nice because they tend to be more versatile and work well with a variety of different colored washi tapes and highlighter/pen colors.

Transparent Sticky Notes or Vellum
These transparent sticky notes and vellum are ideal for people who don’t want to write in their actual Bible. You can place (or washi tape!) the paper inside your Bible, take notes and underline/circle the text - with virtually any writing implement - and still have a clean page should you decide to remove the note. Also, it just looks cool to be able to still see the Bible’s text but also have your notes easily accessible. Vellum can also be bought in a variety of colors and still keeps some of its transparency.

Eric Condren Notebooks
One of our specific favorites of the EC notebooks is the graph paper option. From the sturdy coil to the heavy-duty paper and the quality covers, it’s easy to love these notebooks. They’re sold on Amazon in a variety of colors and sizes. Some have tabs and they’re sold in different kinds of paper (dot, graph, lined, blank). If you need a generic notebook, these are the best!

We hope you’ve found some helpful resources today!

Happy journaling & note taking!
