“Habits of the Household”

Practicing the Story of God in Everyday Family Rhythms

By: Justin Whitmel Earley

Resource By: Ashley Moss

It is easy during the parenting years to get so overwhelmed with the daily tasks…

that we forget to see we are raising people who need us to be intentional.  As Christians, we should be living our lives to point our children back to Christ, even in the mundane moments.

Justin Whitmel Earley's book helps families develop daily habits, making parenting with purpose intentional and Christ -centered. By developing habits in our everyday tasks, we will create routines that bring peace to both our homes and our children.

The purpose of forming these habits will not only establish more order in your home, but will also allow time for more rest, play, and relationships.

Habits of the Household is divided into ten chapters covering every part of the day, starting with habits needed when waking and ending with habits needed at bedtime. He also has habits for work, mealtimes, marriage, conversation, and most other parts of the day.

As a father to four boys, Earley includes personal stories from his own parenting journey in each chapter making this book relatable to most parents with children still at home.

Each chapter ends with a cheat sheet that includes a summary of the habit, tips to begin the habit, and other resources that will make implementing the habit easier. These cheat sheets are incredibly helpful to refer back to after you have finished the book and help give  the  confidence that the habits are doable in your own home.

Audience: Parents with children still at home.

Usefulness Rating: Families can all benefit from creating habits and routines in their homes and lives.

Entertainment Value: This definitely leans more towards a self-help book and less for entertainment purposes, but the author's stories about raising children are entertaining, keeping this book interesting.

Good for groups: This book was not written for a group study but could be easily adapted into a group study.
