Kids Fall Book Recommendations

By: Ashley Davis

This is a somewhat unusual review from us at FT2, but with fall in full swing, it seems like the right time to have a fun, seasonal recommendation. Today, we’re recommending books for children that have fall themes. A couple of them are board books (think toddler age) and others are for geared more toward the 4-8 year old range.

God’s Blessings of Fall has some of the most beautiful illustrations I’ve seen in a children’s book (and I’ve seen a lot!). This one goes through several animals that are common in the fall season and has lots of fun animal sounds and onomatopoeias. This is one of my children’s books I enjoy the most! I’ll be sad to shelve it when this season comes to an end. As a note, I also think this one is worth spending a few extra dollars to have in the hardcover version.

Autumn in the Forest is a life-a-flap board book that littles ones are bound to love. As a mom with a rowdy toddler that loves to open and close books, doors, cabinets, and lift-a-flap books, I hugely appreciate the sturdiness of this little book. The flaps are made of the same thick board book material as the covers and pages of this book, so they can’t be pulled off easily by those excited littles hands! Trust me… I’ve seen many a lift-a-flap book go to its grave for all of its flaps having been detached! This book has cute, colorful pictures with lots of animals and fall woodland themes.

A Pumpkin Prayer is a sweet, simple board book that focuses on a prayer of thanksgiving for all things fall. The illustrations portray a trio of cute little mice as they give thanks for different parts of the fall season – including the reminder of God’s love! When I read this one with my kids, we did other pumpkin related activities and games, and they loved it!

The Berenstain Bears’ Harvest Festival tells the story of a harvest festival being hosted by the Chapel in the Woods. From apple and pumpkin picking to a community prayer and feast, this book has all the staples of fall along with that classic Berenstain Bears’ moral and jest.

The Berenstain Bears Give Thanks is certainly geared toward the older end of the kid group, but it’s a fun story of the Bears working together to act out the first Thanksgiving. It’s a reminder of God’s provision, at the first Thanksgiving and at the Bears’ Thanksgiving too! I so appreciate knowing what kind of content I’m going to discover when I pick up one of these books. Their cover description of being “a faith story” is certainly accurate.
