Let’s Talk Birthday Cake DECOR

By: Ruthie Tanner

If you’ve purchased a special occasion cake lately, you may have experienced price shock- perhaps it’s way more than you really want to pay.

Here’s a few quick hacks that can help you think outside the box, and it’s something literally anyone can do.

Recently I saw a pic of a cake that caught my eye. Since I was planning a small special 86th birthday celebration, I decided this cake design would be perfect.

Not having the time (or desire) to bake the cake myself, I took the pic to my local grocery store bakery.

It was a simple order choosing the icing color and simple design of icing only around the bottom. The price was super affordable. It was actually less than I could have made the cake PLUS I’m saving my time. Win Win!!

However, if you know me I couldn’t leave a special occasion cake with plain decor!

I purchased large gold numbers #8 & #6 from a local craft store in the baking area for less than $2 each.

I also grabbed some fresh florals to accent the icing color from the grocery store floral Dept. while picking up the cake.

Once at the party location I inserted the numbers that came on a wooden dowel.

Cutting the florals off the stem, placed them around the base of the numbers and added a touch of greenery behind the numbers.

WOW - now we have a beautiful CUSTOM looking cake for a fraction of “custom cake” price!

Everyone was inquiring where the beautiful cake was purchased.

Well- do you think I told them my secret??

Another Fun Custom Cake Hack

I ordered a cake with icing in turquoise - perfect color for a mermaid cake right?

Ordered the decor off Amazon for a very reasonable price.

Added the decor, cookies and placed the # 5 candle into the side. I cut the wick off the 5 since I added candles on top.

What a happy little 5 year old GRAND who is in love with mermaids!

It was one of a kind- which makes it priceless right??

Ohhhh the fun doesn’t stop there-
I ordered a plain chocolate cake with chocolate icing and turned it into a “construction zone” for a sweet GRANDS 2 year old birthday party.

OH MY - what a hit!

I’ll admit I had too much fun digging holes and “ destroying” the cake. Crushed up a package of delicious Oreos for “the dirt” and spread it around the base. Added the construction equipment on top which was made of card stock.

You could use toy tractors etc if you wanted.

Amazon again for the win on decor.

These were all a HUGE hit … each one very unique and one of a kind cake.

I admit it was a blast doing each “custom” cake.

The expense was very small for a “designer custom cake” look and I was able to get exactly the look I wanted.

Don’t get caught paying high prices for beautiful cakes when YOU can add the decor and get the look you desire for any occasion.

Happy cake decorating!
